Description
Taurine 99% Powder
Taurine is a naturally occurring amino sulfonic acid found throughout the human body. Unlike the amino acids used to build proteins, taurine occurs mainly in its free form and is particularly abundant in tissues including skeletal muscle, the brain, heart and retina.
The body can synthesise taurine from sulphur-containing amino acids, while additional taurine is obtained from the diet. It occurs naturally mainly in animal-derived foods and is also present in human breast milk.
Taurine has been extensively studied because of its involvement in several fundamental physiological processes, including cell-volume regulation, calcium handling, membrane function and bile-acid conjugation. It is also present at particularly high concentrations in retinal tissue.
Our Taurine 99% is a highly purified white crystalline powder with no added fillers, flavouring, preservatives or sweeteners.
Research on Taurine
Taurine has been investigated in a wide range of nutritional and physiological research.
It plays recognised biochemical roles in osmoregulation, intracellular calcium regulation and formation of taurine-conjugated bile acids. Taurine is also highly concentrated in the retina and other excitable tissues.
Taurine supplementation has also been studied in connection with exercise and physical performance. Some studies report effects on particular exercise outcomes, but findings depend on dose, exercise type and study design, and taurine does not currently have an authorised EU health claim for improving physical performance or muscle function.
Taurine and ageing have recently become areas of scientific interest. Animal studies have generated hypotheses concerning taurine and healthy ageing, but current human evidence does not establish taurine deficiency as a general cause of ageing or demonstrate a longevity effect from supplementation.
